The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj, which means "to unite." The yoga system provides a methodology for uniting ones individuality with the Absolute One, linking up individual consciousness with the Absolute Consciousness.
Considering the system in which Yoga is being taught there are various schools, amongst which bhakti-yoga, jnana-yoga, karma-yoga, and kundalini-yoga have their good base. However most of the main stream yoga centers teach asana (postures) & pranayama (breathing techniques) which are basically coming 2 of the 8 parts of patanjala (asatanga)-yoga-system. Traditionally there are 6 schools of vedic philosophy and patanjala (asatanga)-yoga-system is 1 of them. This school of yoga, also known as astanga-yoga (yoga of 8 principle system). It is called patanjala-yoga because it was systematized by the ancient sage Patanjali. His literary work is known as patanjala-yoga-sutra. There are various commentaries on this text, Vyasa's Yoga Bhashya being the most ancient and profound for those who are looking at the further study of this system.
