Yoga at Your place

And what you’ve been robbed of.

Are you looking for a real yogi to learn yoga from but don’t want to go all the way to Mt.Kailash?

Do you feel neglected by the instructor in large group classes?

Ever get the feeling the “instructors” in the corporate fitness industry aren’t really as qualified as they’re hyped up to be?

Have you ever felt that large group classes often fail to address your specific needs and level?

Do you ever get the feeling in large group classes that it’s just more of the same ‘ol same ‘ol?

Do you abhor commuting?

Are you looking for a bit more in your yoga practice?

What is Yoga?

Then perhaps Yoga at Your place is just the thing you’ve been looking for.

Many people are under the incorrect assumption that a large group yoga class basically offers the same level of knowledge and instruction in Yoga, but at a discount price. Nothing could be further from the truth.

An instructor in a large group class has the task of dealing with – the large group. By definition that means the class is for the group, not for YOU. Individuals in large group classes are almost without exception, completely ignored.

To help put things in perspective, consider the following common scenario:

A person joins a large group class of say, 15 persons, can anyone honestly say with a straight face that the individual student – that’s YOU- receives the same amount of attention as well as quality instruction that someone who joins a small, or private class enjoys?

An individual in the average large group class of 15 people, receives an average of only 4 minutes of the teacher’s time, in the average 60 minute class, and that’s IF the instructor pauses to address the individual at all! (Notice I said “instructor”, I didn’t say “teacher”, there’s a rather large difference)

Compare that to an individual receiving 20 minutes of the teacher’s time in a 3 person class, or 60 minutes of the teacher’s time in a private class! That’s 5 times more of the teacher’s attentionand instruction – for the 3 person class, and 15 times more for the private class! Plus in small and private classes, the class is actually CUSTOM TAILORED to the individual’s specific needs and progresses as the individual progresses, rather than taught to a nameless, faceless entity known as the large group, otherwise called a “mob” or “herd”, without addressing ANY of the individual’s needs. But there’s more.

A student who joins the average large group class of 15 persons and pays the average fee of 150$ for the class, is paying 37.5hk$ per minute for his measly 4 individual minutes of the teacher’s time. (60 minutes / 15 persons = 4 minutes, 150hk$ / 4 = 37.5hk$).

Compare that to a 3 person class in which each individual pays the average fee for such classes of 300hk$ per person, and the individual receives 5 times more personal attention and custom tailored instruction, paying 15hk$ per minute of the teacher’s time (60 minute class / 3 people = 20 minutes per individual, 300hk$ / 20 = 15hk$/minute). Wait, you mean that’s nearly 3 times cheaper, for 5 times more attention, and effectively an increase of 750% cost-versus-efficiency over a large group class and not to mention custom tailored & progressive instruction aimed at the individual’s real needs? Gee, I never thought of it that way. How about the person who joins a 1 on 1 private class and pays the average run of the mill fee of 800hk$ per class and thus receives 15 times more individual quality attention and instruction than a large group class while paying only 13.3hk$ per minute or 2.8 times cheaper than the large group class? That’s an increase in cost-versus-efficiency of 4200% over a large group class.

All things are not equal. Pay peanuts, get peanuts.

It’s about quality.

Consider this:

If you and 14 other people pitch in to buy a pie, how much of that pie do YOU actually get to eat?

How much of that pie would YOU get to eat if you and 2 close friends bought and enjoyed it together?

Or would you prefer to have YOUR OWN pie and buy one all for yourself?

Where’s your satisfaction?

Not to mention the WORST thing about large corporate classes – other than unqualified instructors – is that it creates the illusion that Yoga is somehow made in a factory, or “somewhere else” other than what it always was which is “Right here, right now”. This habit of “going somewhere else” in order to access Yoga creates the subconscious pattern and belief that Yoga is over there, and inaccessible to me in the Here & Now. This unfortunately takes away your power and detracts tremendously from your own Personal Practice which can be done anytime, anywhere, and the only thing you need is just enough space to roll out your matt, and your breath! Once you ease into the first pose and begin the sacred ritual of loving yourself and spending time with yourself through your God-given-breath, then health, happiness, and peace of mind automatically wash over you in a healing embrace that makes “stress” become a far away and distant thing of the past. In that moment, as you savor such satisfaction in the self, Time stands still, Space loses meaning, and you suddenly remember, with full clarity, the things that really matter in life.

That is Yoga.

Yoga is never denied to you and only accessible “over there”.

Yoga – and our breath - are always with us, we’ve just been conditioned to think otherwise.

Generally speaking in a large group class what you’re really getting is a “work out” overseen by an “instructor”, rather than “teachings” that are cumulative and progressive taught by a “teacher”, and when you think about it, if all you want to do is just “work out”, hey, come on, you don’t need to pay anybody for that.

An instructor is simply a cog in a machine who conducts the operations of the corporation. He’s basically an employee, otherwise known as a wage-slave.

A teacher on the other hand, is someone who actually practices Yoga and thus with a little patience can actually teach yoga to another, - imagine that - and if he embodies and personifies the principles and philosophy of Yoga in his daily life, then he is known as a Yogi.

Did I mention on top of all this, I’ll come to you? That’s right, that means “No commuting time!” (Yeah!), and considering time is money, just think how much time and money you’ll be saving by not having to commute, which can instead be reserved for better LIVING!

One of the best things about Yoga-at-Your-place is that it helps empower ourselves rather than some greedy corporation, and strengthens our Personal Practice by enabling us to develop the healthy habit of self-reliance and self-empowerment that is regular Yoga practice in the Here & Now. When you think about it, and realize what you’ve been robbed of; “Yoga at MY place, on MY time, when I want, where I want, whenever I feel like it”, what could be more rejuvenating and self-empowering than that?
